Ethan Stanislawski grew up in New York under the shadow of Columbia University, where his father is a legendary professor of Jewish history. On his mother’s side, his grandfather was a pioneering left wing politician in Brookline Massachusetts. Ethan was raised in an intensely Jewish community, and though it was liberal (and incredibly wealthy), it created traumatic experiences involving bullying, mental health, and medical malpractice. It was also an incredibly Zionist community, which caused chaos during his political coming of age. In the show Ethan addresses his Jewish religious trauma, his fractured experience visiting Israel, death, grief, and an often challenging relationship with his family and community, despite the bonds that tied them together so deeply.
